PDI for Old Car: Used Car PDI and Inspection Before You Buy

Looking for a PDI for an old car? Here's what a used car PDI (old car inspection) checks, what it costs and when to book it, before you pay the seller.

Most people hear "PDI" when they buy a new car. PDI stands for pre delivery inspection: a check of the car before you accept it. But more and more buyers now search for a PDI for old car purchases too, and it's a good instinct. A second hand car needs a careful check before you pay even more than a new one does.

Strictly speaking, an inspection for a used car is called a used car inspection or pre-purchase inspection. Most people simply call it an old car PDI or used car PDI. Whatever you call it, the idea is the same: find out the real condition of the car before money changes hands.

Old car PDI vs new car PDI: what's the difference?

A new car PDI looks for problems that may have happened between the factory and you: transport damage, repainting at the dealer yard, missing accessories or warning lights.

A pre delivery inspection for an old car starts from a different question: what has this car been through? It looks at wear, past repairs, accident history, maintenance and paperwork. So it covers more ground than a new car check.

Second hand car inspection checklist: what an inspection for an old car checks

1. Body and paint

Every panel is checked for dents, scratches, uneven paint, colour differences and uneven panel gaps. These are common signs of earlier accident repair.

2. Engine and gearbox

The inspector looks at the engine bay for leaks and loose parts, listens to the engine running, and checks how the gears shift.

3. Tyres, brakes and suspension

Uneven tyre wear can point to alignment or suspension problems. Brakes and suspension are checked on the test drive.

4. Electricals and diagnostics

Lights, windows, locks, infotainment, AC, sensors and cameras are tested one by one. Where the car supports it, a diagnostic scan reads stored fault codes that aren't visible from outside.

5. Odometer and service history

The kilometre reading is compared with the service records and with wear on the steering wheel, pedals and seats. If they don't match, that's a question for the seller.

6. Flood and accident signs

Damp carpets, a musty smell, rust in hidden places or mud under trims can mean the car has been in water.

7. Documents

The RC, insurance and PUC are checked, and the chassis and engine numbers are matched against the papers.

8. Test drive

A proper drive shows how the car accelerates, brakes, steers and shifts in normal conditions, not just around the parking lot.

Is a used car PDI really necessary?

You can check many of these points yourself. But repainting, repaired panels and stored fault codes are easy to miss without experience and the right tools. A short look at the car and a five-minute drive rarely show them.

A PDI service for an old car gives you an independent inspector with nothing to gain from the sale, and a written report with photos. You can use it to negotiate a fair price, ask the seller to fix something, or walk away from a bad deal.

Doorstep old car inspection: how CarParakh does it

  1. Book online and share the car and seller details.
  2. A CarParakh inspector comes to the car, at the seller's home, a used car dealer or a parking lot. You don't need to take the car anywhere.
  3. The car is checked against a 300+ point checklist, outside, inside and on the road.
  4. You get a report with each finding recorded and photographed, so you can decide before paying.

CarParakh is independent: we have no tie-up with any dealer or seller, so the report reflects only the car's condition. Buying a luxury car? See our luxury car PDI service.

We do used car inspections in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

More questions

Can I get a doorstep inspection for an old car?

Yes. A CarParakh inspector comes to the car, at the seller's home, a used car dealer or a parking lot.

How can I check a used car's service history?

Ask the seller for service invoices and the service book. You can also ask the brand's authorised service centre for the car's service records. During the inspection, the kilometre reading is compared with these records and with wear on the car.

Will I get a report after the inspection?

Yes. Every finding is recorded in a report with photos, so you can review it before you decide.

Final thoughts

Whether you call it an old car PDI, a used car PDI, a second hand car inspection or simply an inspection for an old car, the goal is the same: know what you're buying before you pay for it. A short inspection can save you from a car with hidden accident damage, a tired engine or paperwork problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a PDI for old cars?expand_more

PDI technically means a check before a new car is delivered. For an old car, the same kind of check is called a used car inspection or pre-purchase inspection. Most people call it an old car PDI or used car PDI. It covers more than a new car PDI, because it also looks at wear, past repairs and documents.

When should I get a used car PDI done?expand_more

Before you pay a deposit or sign anything. Once the money is paid, it's much harder to negotiate or walk away.

What are the charges for a used car PDI?expand_more

It depends on the package and the car. You can see current prices on the CarParakh booking page before you book.

How can I check if a used car has been in an accident?expand_more

Look for repainting, colour differences between panels, uneven panel gaps and replaced parts. A CarParakh inspector checks for these common signs of accident repair and records anything found in the report.
